Coral Reefs
Coral reefs are one of the most beautiful parts of the ocean. They have been one of the most biologically diverse regions on earth, for the last 25 million years. Corals are a combination of animal and plant life. Microscopic structures called alges are contained within the coral. There are also miniature animals called polyps which only exist in the uppermost area of the coral. They are connected to a living tissue and actually constitute the corals. Corals must live in shallow water that is warm. If the water is to deep sunlight will not be able to reach the corals. As corals grow and die they pile up and make a reef. Coral reefs are classified into three types. Barrier reefs which grow parellel to the shoreline, and are seperated by water from the main land. Reefs that are permanant from the landmass are Fringing reefs. The last kind of reefs are Atolls. Atolls are islands made of coral surronding a central lagoon. Around 25 percent ocean life live in coral reefs. Sharks, clams, crabs, clownfish, eels, and other animals are mainly found there. However, scientists have now warned that in the next few years we may lose the fascinating structures. Pollution and erosion are the main reaons behind the disappearance of the reefs. Coral reefs are amazing structures, and will hopefully be around for a long time.
